Preparing for Long-Term RV Storage

parked recreational vehicleDue to the fact that you enjoy giving blood, one mosquito at a time while getting closer to nature and trying to determine how it is possible for one match to start a forest fire while it takes a whole box of matches to start a campfire, you purchased an RV. The problem is, you need a place to park it when it is not in use. Maybe you’re not allowed to park it in your own driveway or would like it better protected rather than being out in the open. AAA Self Storage has RV storage available at our west side location for every camper extraordinaire.

Steps to Take Before Going to an RV Storage for an Extended Period

There are a number of things that you need to do in order to prepare your vehicle for RV storage. You cannot simply pull in, park and walk away. If you do, when you come back in a few months ready to roll, you will not be able to.

The first thing you should do is make sure that nothing that can go bad is left in the refrigerator. Once the food is removed, you need to defrost and clean it. Then, place a box of baking soda on one of the shelves and leave the door open a bit. Otherwise, it will smell when you come back. Next, close all the blinds so that the sun and rodents do not damage the interior. You should also look for and repair any cracks at this time.

Finally, you need to turn the main LPG supply valve off. Also be sure to cover all of the vents so that insects are not attracted to or able to crawl into your vehicle. Also, be sure that you have a full tank of gas and a fresh oil change before you store your RV for the season.

Steps to Take When You Get to the RV Storage

Once your RV is parked in storage, add fuel stabilizer to both your RV and your generator. Then, let both idle for at least two hours. Once that is complete, disconnect and store the battery. Try not to park by a tree or grass. Lastly, use a cover that is breathable in order to avoid mold and mildew.

While your vehicle is in RV storage be sure to go by every two months and let the it idle for a few hours. You should also move it a bit so that you do not have flat spots on your tires when you are ready to set out on your next adventure. If you are looking for RV storage in the El Paso area, contact AAA Self Storage. We have both short and long term RV storage available at our west side location.
